Generational Momentum

Begin to explore your story of generational momentum and the impact of your family on your life, spiritually and emotionally.

Is this for you?

This is for you if you've started to notice...

  • the same patterns showing up in your family, one generation after another.
  • yourself reacting the way your mom or dad did, even when you promised yourself you wouldn't.
  • unspoken rules about money, conflict, feelings or success that still shape how you live.
  • a longing to understand where you come from, so you can hand something better to the people you love.

The truth is, many live their lives, navigating relationships at work, with friends and family, and with their children, largely unaware of a much bigger story at work silently shaping how they live and what they do. Few would argue that their family has had a significant impact on the person they are today. However, few have begun to examine and truly understand that impact.

It is something I call generational momentum and it is a powerful force at work in our lives.

What might God have for us, then, if we would hear and accept an invitation to begin looking into the impact of generational momentum? What might we discover as we take time to look, as awareness grows, and understanding emerges? Jesus has an invitation for all of us…to see with our eyes, hear with our ears, and understand with our hearts and turn to him and find healing (Matthew 13:15). It is an invitation that starts with awareness; awareness that leads to him and the healing he offers each of us. That is a truly revolutionary invitation.

This workshop is a very “intentional” step for you and the people you love: a day to begin exploring, together, our stories of generational momentum and the impact of our families on our lives, spiritually and emotionally.

What the day is like

Generational Momentum is a one-day workshop that combines teaching, conversation, silence and solitude, reflection and prayer. You'll learn to map your family on a genogram, take unhurried time alone with God to notice the patterns, wounds and messages that have been handed down, and talk it through with your spouse or a friend and with the group.

Along the way we watch a few short film clips that show how complicated family stories can be. Many people come with a spouse or a friend, and you're just as welcome on your own. Recommended for ages 18 and up.

“Family patterns from the past are played out in our present relationships without us necessarily being aware of it.”Peter Scazzero, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality

Scripture: Matthew 13:15

What you'll walk away with

  • A clear understanding of generational momentum: the norms, beliefs and expectations that make up your family's culture, usually unspoken and unexamined.
  • Your own genogram, a simple map of your family you can keep coming back to.
  • A deeper awareness of how your family story still shapes you and your relationships.
  • Clarity on God's invitations to you for healing, and next steps in response.

A step you can take today

Start your genogram with one question

Awareness is always the first step toward healing and freedom. You can begin today with a sheet of paper and ten quiet minutes.

  1. Draw three rows: your grandparents at the top, your parents and their brothers and sisters in the middle, and you and your brothers and sisters at the bottom.
  2. Ask God to show you what he wants you to see. Then sit quietly with one question: What did I need from my dad, from my mom, and from the rest of my family?
  3. Write down whatever comes, without judging it. Where did you get what you needed? Where didn't you?

That's enough for today. It's not a race.
